FREC 4 Course

The QA Level 4 Certificate in First Response Emergency Care (FREC 4) (RQF) is the next step for learners who have successfully completed Level 3 Certificate, and want to advance their skills, confidence, and employability within prehospital care. This highly respected qualification enhances clinical knowledge, practical decision-making, and patient assessment skills, helping learners progress into roles such as Ambulance Support Worker, Emergency Care Support Worker (ECSW), Associate Ambulance Practitioner (AAP), and event or private medical roles.

Recognised across the ambulance and prehospital care sector, FREC 4 is designed for those who are serious about developing a career in emergency and urgent care settings. The course provides a strong balance of theory and hands-on practical training, ensuring learners feel confident responding to real-world incidents.

Aligned to the PHEM Skills Framework at Descriptor Level E, the qualification equips learners with the skills and competence to manage a wide range of prehospital emergencies. Learners will develop expertise in trauma care, fracture immobilisation, patient assessment, managing medical emergencies, responding to major incidents, supporting sick and injured children, and dealing with mental health crises. By the end of the course, learners will be better prepared, more capable, and ready to respond professionally and effectively in dynamic prehospital environments.

The QA Level 4 Certificate in First Response Emergency Care – FREC 4 (RQF)

This FREC 4 course is a regulated and nationally recognised prehospital care qualification specifically designed for those looking to progress their career within the NHS or private ambulance services as an emergency care assistant, intermediate ambulance practitioner, event medical provider, associate practitioner or healthcare assistant. It is also ideal for those who are looking to work within specialist roles in the military, police and fire services.

Entry requirements

Learners must be at least 17 years old on the first day of starting the FREC 4 course.

There are no other formal entry requirements but to benefit from the learning we advise that Learners have a minimum of Level 2 in literacy and numeracy or equivalent and a basic understanding of first aid.

It may be possible to allocate a reasonable adjustment to a learner who has a disability, medical condition or learning need; learners should contact us to discuss. Any reasonable adjustments granted must be in line with the Qualsafe Reasonable Adjustments Policy.
